But one of the most important factors in resident wellbeing is invisible: the quality of the air residents breathes. Why Indoor Air Quality Deserves More Attention

Older adults are more likely to have chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD or asthma, and many spend most of their time indoors. In a 24-month evaluation, infection rates declined by approximately 48% in rooms using hydroxyl technology, while rates in the adjacent control unit remained essentially unchanged.

Some cleaning chemicals release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can linger in the air and irritate sensitive respiratory systems. Choosing low-VOC or green-certified chemicals where appropriate, and ensuring proper ventilation during and after chemical use, helps protect indoor air quality without sacrificing cleaning effectiveness.

Maintenance Keeps the Benefits Consistent

An air-quality-conscious equipment program only works if the equipment stays in good condition. HEPA filters that are not replaced on schedule lose their effectiveness and worn seals or gaskets can allow unfiltered air to bypass the filtration system entirely. Likewise, hydroxyl-based equipment requires its UV optics to be replaced periodically. Regular maintenance ensures that the equipment continues delivering the air quality benefits it was chosen for.
